WAR-TIME ADVENTURE

AIR RAID ON HULL SINKING OF A U-BOAT AUSTRALIAN’S STORY (Ter Tress Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Exciting adventures since the outbreak of war were related by F. Hurley. the Australian League footballer, who is returning home after playing for several seasons in England. He is accompanied bv three Australian cricketers, J. E. Walsh, J. G. Lush and V. E. Jackson who, until recently, were members of Sir Julien Cahn’s team.

"In Hull there was an air raid the first night of the war,” said Mr. Hurley. “The all-clear signal was given two hours later. There were planes about, but the people could not tell whether they were British or enemy machines.”

Hurley left Liverpool on September 1G in a vessel which was convoyed by two destroyers. Three hours out in Ithe the destroyers located a submarine and later reported that it had been sunk. The destroyers dropped TTve depth charges and the vibration was felt on the ship. Before reaching Montreal, the captain told them that they had to thank the British Navy for their safe passage as a British plane, which flew over the second day out had signalled him to change his course. The cricketers travelled from England to America by other vessels.
