H.B. REGIMENT
COMMANDING OFFICER MAJOR IRVING PROMOTED Major J. H. Irving, E.D., of Masterton, ollicer commanding the Hawke’s Bay Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Lieutenant-Colonel Irving had a notable record of service in the Great War and also in the territorial forces. He joined the forces in Southland
in 1912 and served three years overseas with the Otago Regiment, leaving New Zealand with the Eighth Reinforcements.
In France he took part in the battles of the Somme, 191li, Messines and the Somme, 1918, and was severely wounded while commanding the Eighth Company at Hebuternc. He was promoted to the rank of major in 1925, and for the past few years had acted as second in command of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment. With the retirement of Colonel A. J. M. Manson three months ago, he rose to the command of the regiment. Lieutenant - Colonel Irving has taken a prominent part in the work of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, of which lie has been a vice-president.
