UNION DISCONTENT

OTAGO LABOURERS EXECUTIVE CRITICISED CHANGED SUBSCRIPTION Dissatisfaction with the actions of the executive exists among members of the Otago General Labourers’ Union, according to a statement made to a reporter in Dunedin on Saturday. It is stated that the first cause of complaint is the fact that some members of the executive are gangers and that their responsibility to employers prevents them from acting solely in the interests o£ the workers’ organisation.

The question of representation at the Dominion conference of the union has been a subject of controversy at recent meetings, and at a meeting of the union to-night the actions of the executive with respect to alterations to Hie rule dealing with subscriptions are to be the subject of a resolution of protest.

The position with respect to the cluingf? in the rule is said lo be that the union in September adopted a resolution providing that subscriptions should be payable in one sum of on October 1. instead of quarterly instalments. An alteration was subsequently approved at a special meeting, but a postal ballot was required before it could be incorporated in the rules. The fact that ballot papers have not been issued, it is stated, has been the cause of repeated complaints and exception lias been taken to the fact that a notice issued by (he secretary stated that arrangements had been made to issue an annual ticket of £1 each October 1.

Opponents of the change claim that it creates hardship, especially for seasonal workers. They also hold that the secretary is not authorised to make the change until it is aepproved by postal ballot.

The resolution (o be submitted tonight will demand that a postal ballot be taken. Other complaints regarding the actions of tire executive will be ventilated and feelings of the dissatisfied section are indicated by the final clause of the resolution, which demands that the positions of president, secretary and the whole of the executive be declared vacant.
