MATAROA TOURISTS
GROUP FROM GISBORNE RETURNING FROM U.K. Among the passengers aboard the Mataroa, the New Zealand-bound liner which was reported to have been in danger from a submarine in the Caribbean Sea last week, are several Gisborne tourists, including four of one family. The latter, Mr. and . Mrs. E. T. Ladd, of Mangapapa, and their two daughters, the Misses Doris and Ethel Ladd, left New Zealand early in April on a visit to the United Kingdom. They were caught by the declaration of war, and for some time were uncertain as to their prospects of returning to New Zealand as a group. Recently, however, they advised another member of the family in .Gisborne that they hoped to sail on the Mataroa. Relatives and friends in this district are naturally deeply concerned regarding their safety, but the absence of news regarding the liner is taken as an indication that the Mataroa eluded the attentions of the enemy craft. Two other Gisborne tourists who are understood to have sailed from the United Kingdom by the Mataroa arc Messrs. F. 11. Lawton and Jack Lawton.
