GOLF CHAMPIONS

N.Z. FOURSOMES

NEW TITLE-HOLDERS

GUY-WEIR SUCCESS

PROFESSIONAL CROWN

SMITH AND GLADING WIN (Per Press Association.) WELINGTON, this day. Both holders of the amateur and professional foursomes championships of New Zealand lost their titles yesterday when the golf tournament was continued at Miramar.

Hornabrook, the new open champion. and Silk, with 77 and 78, finished eight strokes behind “Pax” Smith, the present amateur champion, and Glading, the young player from Hamilton, who were closely followed by Reilly, the runner-up in the amateur championship last year, and Ewen, the Hutt champion.

In the professional title Guy and Weir were level with Shaw and Murray at the end of the morning’s round, but a splendid card of 09 against their opponents’ 70 gave them an easy victory.

Foursomes clay is not generally expected to produce sensational golf and, but for Guy and Weir’s second round of 09, yesterday would have been dull and uninteresting.

The weather was perfect for good scoring. Naturally there were several isolated bright spots in the 100 odd rounds played. Somebody sliced into a fowlhouse at the tenth, but it took “Pax" Smith and Glading to turn on the brightest exhibition. They did a steady first 18 in 74 —37 out. At the third, a weak drive struck a fence post and bounced back into the line. They began auspiciously in the afternoon, when Glading’s approach at the first landed in a ditch. Smith played a. sandblaster nearly on his hands and knees lo within 12ft. from the cup. Glading missed a two-footer at the twelfth but Smith sank one from 25ft. out at the sixteenth, which really won the title. He split the face of his brassie half-way round and, from the thirteenth, had lo use his driver, which lie had not touched for two years. The pair were out in 35 and back in 38.

Inspired Game

Davidge and Carr played an inspired game in the afternoon, but had already spoilt their chances through putting lapses in the morning. After a concentrated effort in the open championship, Hornabrook and Silk, who were considered to be the strongest combination, yesterday showed a relapse of form to return a mediocre 77 and 78. Bdth were off the line at times with their tee shots, and indifferent putting cost, them a number of strokes.

Main interest in the professionals centred in the seventies of Guy and Weir and the title-holders Shaw and Murray. The former, however, kept at it in the afternoon and were leading by three strokes after the tenth, where Shaw and Murray were one over fours. Shaw’s putter cost them too much for the way Guy and Weir were hitting them, and Murray’s short game suffered a setback. If they could have repeated the all-round brilliance that characterised their morning round, Shaw and Murray might have broken 70 also. Weir’s drive at the second, 300yds., in the afternoon reached the green, and Guy sank a 32l't. putt for tin eagle. Both were playing sound golf. Weir was strong with his irons and his putting left little to be desired. Guy hit his characteristic long ball almost always on a true line.

In the professional title to-day. Lambic will play against T. Galloway, having won on the count back from John Weir.
