WAIROA CARNIVAL
TO CLOSE ON DEC. 30
AMICABLE DECISION (Special io tlie Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The question of the closing date of tlie Wairoa queen carnival, which had been the cause of some difference of opinion among the various queen candidates’ committees, was amicably settled at a meeting of representatives. There were, present Mr. W. T. Feet, chairman. Messrs. H. L. Harker, and H. H. O'Loughlen, controlling committee. Mrs. K. Mcßae, Messrs. W G. Brownlie, and T. Delaney, county; Mr. E. A. Jones, citizens; Mcsdames J. Macgregor, B. F. Pickering, H. Lindsay, Messrs. A. T. Carroll, and Dick McGregor, Maori; Mr. C. Wheeler. P.W.D.; and the organiser, Mr. J. Woolf.
The question of a combined effort in the form of a garden party was raised and it was decided to hold a function of this nature on Saturday, December 9. Each committee will be allotted a number of stalls such as produce, cakes, sweets, flowers, books and jumble, ns well ns side-shows, and fortune telling. It is proposed in conjunction with the party to hold a baby show, and an all kinds of dog show. It is hoped to enlist the services of the band, a Maori concert party, and other organisations to provide entertainment during the afternoon. Conclusion of Carnival The fixing of the closing date of the queen carnival occupied the attention of the meeting for sometime. Mr. Wheeler, the P.W.D. representative, mentioned the difficulty of carrying on after Christmas, due to the closing down of the camps over the holiday period. He expressed the opinion that his committee would welcome a closing date before Christmas.
Mr. Brownlie, county, mentioned the difficulties confronting them in their campaign, and said the county favoured a short intensive campaign, closing on, say, December 16. Mr. Jones, citizens, said that his committee would prefer an early closing, as many of its supporters would bo away on holiday after Christmas. Messrs. Carroll and McGregor mentioned the difficulty of organising among the Maori people prior to Christmas, as so many were away on seasonal occupations, and that for them, to be 100 per cent effective the campaign would need to be extended until carnival week.
Mr. O'Loughlen suggested that perhaps a compromise could be arrived at by closing on December 30. This was acceptable to the other three committees, and after consultation with the other Maori delegates, Mr. Carroll announced that he was willing to fall in line with the other committees.,
This decision was endorsed subsequently by an enthusiastic gathering of the Maori candidate, who were attending a dance in her honour in the Taihoa Hall.
The actual closing will take place at midnight on December 30 at a dance to be held in the Mayfair Hall.
