Pioneer Battalion

Sir, —Many of the Pioneers who held commissions in the last war were a fine body of men and we are proud of them. Unfortunately there were others who were, dependent, on their pay and. who found it very difficult to meet the heavy mess trills and uniform requirements set out by the regulations and the many other incidental out, of pocket expenses customary to the status of an army officer and gentleman overseas. Immediate attention should Ire drawn to this rather important matter. A number of our young Maoris who have joined up to-day have the ability and education to accept a commission if the authorities will subsidise those holding commissions and who have no private income other than their army pay. TAKAPUNA RANGIUIA.
