EROSION BY SEA
HOUSES THREATENED NEW PLYMOUTH FISSURE A new fissure 50ft. long has opened along the cliff edge within a yard or two of residential properties on Woolcombe terrace. New Plymouth, where rapid erosion by the sea is taking place. It is not known to wliat depth the fissure extends, but the latest evidence of erosion of the cliff marks a movement more extensive than others which have occurred in recent months.
Almost al! the roadway formerly used by traffic approaching the terrace from the western end has been carried away. The road was closed to vehicles for more than two years, and a footpath on the inland side has been protected by a strong netting fence. The new fissure is 2ft from the fence, arid only 3 yards from the corner of an occupied house property. The Borough Council and the Harbour Board are to consider a scheme for the protection of Woolcombc terrace against erosion. The scheme provider, for a protective work a quarter of a mile long. Briefly, the suggestion is to lay a foundation of heavy stone, and on it east concrete in the form of stenfj.
