A temporary commission in the rank of flight lieutenant has been granted to Mr. R. G. Sherwood Hale, Te Puia, who is posted to the equipment branch, Section 1, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
Among the military appointments notified in the current issue of the New Zealand Gazette is that of Major C. N. Devery, D.C.M., from the Reserve of Officers to be Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General, Central Military Command, Wellington. Major Devery, who takes up his new appointment with the rank of captain, served in the last war with the Hawke's Bay Regiment, and gained his decoration in July, 1917, in a raid in the neighbourhood of Warneton, in the Messines sector. He haa resided in Wellington for some years.
On Saturday evening 40 members 6f the Old Boys Rugby Football Club fafewelled Mr. H. Littler, who was leaving Gisborne to-day to join the New Zealand special military force. The president of the club, Mr. G. J. Jeune, who was in the chair, referred to tiie fine sense of sportsmanship of the guest of honour, and also his value on the field of play. He had entered senior Rugby when comparatively young, and several times had gained representative honours behind the scrum for the Poverty Bay side. Mr. Littler’s versatility on the athletic field was mentioned by Mr. W. H. James, who spoke on behalf of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic anti Harrier Club, and other speakers were Mr. Brian Malone, on behalf of the Kindred clubs, Mr. A. E. Ingram for the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association, and Messrs. C. G. Wall and C. G. Vail.
