WOOL DISPOSALS

AUSTRALIAN ACTIVITY BENEFITS TO THE GROWER CONTRAST WITH 1914-15 The pace of wool appraisements in Australia has resulted in quantities of wool being dealt with in excess of auction totals during a similar period. Every bale offered is sold, whereas at auction about 10 per cent of supplies is usually passed in in the saleroom, and when demand slackens withdrawals are larger, states Winchcombe, Carson, Limited, Australian wool brokers. A contrast in the quantity of wool which it is possible to handle under tire scheme compared with efforts which could be made by auction is supplied by experiences of the last war. The total auction offerings in Sydney up to November G, 1914, were 21,915 bales, and during the first month’s Sydney appraisements finishing on November 3. this season, 228,000 bales will have been dealt with. The figures directly influence the monetary position of growers and indirectly they are reflected in the welfare of the whole community. During the whole of the 1914-15 season in Australia only 1,222,872 bales were sold, and this season approximately 3,200,000 bales will be appraised. Onethird of the 1914-15 clip was unsold at June 30, 1915. Sea transport is the wartime problem, and bound up with it is marine insurance. Buyers will only purchase if they can ship the wool to its destination. The British Government pays for the wool as it is appraised irrespective of whether shipment is made. The industry’s position is further strengthened by the purchase of Australian mutton, lamb and beef by the Bri*ish Government, Prior to the outbreak of the war, fears were held that mutton would become very cheap.
