"BLAME ON GOEBBELS"

LONDON, Oct. 22

A columnist of the Sunday Dispatch. Lord Donegall, claims to reveal the story behind the persistence of the German boast that they had sunk the aircraft-carrier Ark Royal. He says: “The Ark Royal was among the units of the Home Fleet which drove off the German bombers while the ships were escorting home a damaged British submarine across the North Sea. When the German bombers last saw the Ark Royal she was heeling over, due to turning at high speed. “The German propaganda department continued to make the announcement gleefully even after the German air force discovered the mistake and reported it. Later, a lone German plane approached the Ark Royal’s base and dropped an empty barrel containing the following message:—“We are sorry that we gave the wrong information about the _ Ark Royal. We have reported the mistake to the authorities, so blame Dr. Goebbels, and not us.”
