ACUTE SHORTAGE
| SUPPLIES OF ONIONS POSITION IN GISBORNE i BAD CONDITION STOCKS LOSSES BY MERCHANTS An acute shortage of onions exists in Gisborne at present, and supi plies that have come to hand recently 1 have been in a bad condition, tner- | chants sustaining heavy losses by | having to discard a good percentage ! of their new stocks.
The representative of one of the leading firms stated to-day that in a recent shipment there was a very large proportion of rejects, amounting to approximately 25 per cent. Another shipment the following week also had to be repacked and large numbers thrown out because of their bad condition. Californian and local onions were included in the shipments.
As a result of their recent experience, merchants have not been keen to order further supplies, particularly as little redress has been secured from the Internal Marketing Department for the losses.
i In the meantime, supplies are very i low in town, and onions arc retailing in Gisborne shops at 4d to (id per lb., j while owing to the reluctance of mer- ! chants to secure further shipments the I shortage may not be relieved for some ! time. 'Position in Auckland ! No supplies of onions are available On the Auckland wholesale market at present, according to latest reports. At the city markets this week the only lots offering were the last of the recent Japanese shipment, which were quoted as in bad condition. Merchants place the blame for the present shortage on the Government prohibition of imports except through the Internal Marketing Department, ■ which earlier this year took complete ; charge.
The seasonal shortage during September, October and November, for many years past has been filled by orders from Canada, with an
occasional filling shipment from California, but inquiries this week showed that none was expected until next month. Normally, about 20,000 bags might be expected to come on the market shortly, but as local crons will not be available for about a
further six weeks, the shortage is likely to be prolonged.
