THREAT TO TOWN
TAUPO SCRUB FIRE
LONG FIGHT WITH FLAMES
A long struggle with a scrub fire which threatened the residential area of Tauoo was carried on on Monday night bv a large band of fire fighters, who were successful about 2 o’clock on Tuesday morning in bringing the flames under control. The fire, which broke out on Saturday, had been burning east in the direction of Tduhara Mountain, but on Monday night the wind changed and swept the flames back toward Taupo on a four-mile front. The glow of the flames lit up the countryside for miles.
Under the direction of Mr. G. G. Potts, fire warden of the district, and Mr. P. Grey, foreman of the Taupo Rond Board, volunteers were engaged in burning back the bush at danger spots arid in beating out the flames when buildings were threatened. Several residents whose homes were in the path of the fire were warned of their danger and evacuated their houses. Cars were loaded with per- • sonal belongings, and residents, some of them clad only in coats and pyjamas, Were taken to safety on the lakefront until the clanger was over.
A CO-acre plantation of pines and eucalyptus planted 30 years ago was swept by the flames, the whole of the plantation being lost.
