Mr. Ronald Syme, Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and formerly of Eltham, is on the headquarters staff of the Ministry of Information, London.

Messrs. F. W. Mac Lean -and J. Glover have been reappoiqted 'as members of the Board of Health, according to the gazette issued last evening.

The Rev. Dr. Alexander Hodge, of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle, accompanied by Mrs. Hodge, has returned from Australia. Dr. Hodge visited Sydney to meet Mrs. Hodge upon her return from England. The following appointments to the New Zealand Tobacco Board were gazetted last evening: Messrs. E. M. Hunt and C. C. Nash (manufacturers representatives) and J. F. Black and F. A. Hamilton (growers’ representatives).

Mr. Aubrey Mason, superintendent of the Ashburton Hospital, who is on 'eave in England, is at present a surgeon specialist in the English Ministry of Health Emergency Medicai Service. He is attached to Sector X of flic London Area, which has Guy’s Ho«p ; tal at its apex. Mrs. Mason (Dr. Zoe Rutherford) is a. radiologist in the same sector.

Captain D. P. Malcolm, former harbourmaster at Calcutta, who was recalled to India seven months ago after settling in retirement in Auckland, has returned. He was accompanied by Mrs. Malcolm. A New Zealander, Captain Malcolm was the first apprentice to serve in the J. J. Craig Line sailing ships. He was recalled to Calcutta to perform naval duties.

Mr. A. J. Deverv, who has retired from the stock department of the Wairoa office of Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Limited, after 25 years’ service, was met recently by the staff and presented with a handsome chiming clock. In making the presentation, Mr. W. A. Crarer, referred to Mr. Devery’s good qualifications, and the popularity he enjoyed with all sec‘ions of the community, and wished him continued good health in his retirement. —Special.
