SERIOUS SHORTAGE
ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
STOCKS EXHAUSTED
UNEMPLOYMENT FEARS
(Pur Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, this day.
There is grave concern among Auckland electrical contractors at the serious shortage of equipment. It is stated that the supplies of conduit and cable are practically exhausted, switchboard material is nearly exhausted and there is a growing shortage of fuses, lamps, lampholders and other essential gear.
The fear is expressed that after December it will be impossible to carry cut wiring contracts in houses or other buildings and there is likely to be unemployment among wiremen and staffs of contractors.
“It is possible those building homes next month will have to rely on light other than electricity,” said the manager of an electrical supply firm to-day. “Licenses for the import of essential materials have been cut heavily. Stocks are now exhausted and it seems impossible to obtain further supplies from overseas until February at the earliest. Some firms will be unable to renew stocks until June.’’
A representative of another firm said he had not a foot of cable or conduit in stock. lie predicted unemployment among country electricians.
