SCHOOL DENTAL CLINIC

TREATMENT OF CHILDREN

WAIROA REQUEST (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The question of dental treatment which could not be supplied by the school clinic was fully discussed at a well-attended meeting of the Wairoa Parents’ League.

Mr Doig stated that certain treatment such as porcelain fillings for front teeth could not be given at the clinic and that in such cases parents had to have the work done by practising dentists. Some of this outside treatment required was costly and many parents were unable to have the treatment attended to, and, as a result, the good work done by the clinic on such children was lost.

It was decided that representations be made to the Government, through the local member of Parliament that “where a child entitled to dental treatment at the school was unable to have the necessary work attended to there the cost of attention by a practising dentist should be met out of the social security fund.”

It was decided also that efforts be made to obtain the balance of moneys required to purchase a piano and that endeavours be made to have a piano placed in the school as early as possible.

For the purpose of raising these funds it was agreed that another old students’ dance be held on Wednesday, November 22, and that advantage be taken of the offer of Mr. R. J. Kerridge for a picture benefit night.

A jsmall sub-committee consisting of Mesdames Pi Iking ton and Scherp and Messrs. Doig, Teller and Tomlinson was set up to interview and make the necessary arrangements with Mr. Barclay as suggested by Mr. Kerridge. The picture benefit night has been arranged for Wednesday, November 29

Mr. S. Ashburn, representing the Wairoa School Committee, gave a

brief outline of the position with regard to the new playing area, stating that the committee hoped to have the work of levelling put in hand as early as possible.
