YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB
CONTESTS IN WAIROA
(Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day
Four teams from the Wairoa Young Farmers Club competed in two debating contests at the monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, the subject for both debates being "That top dressing is the only practicable method of improving second-class hill country.”
In the first contest the affirmative was taken by the Frasertown team, Messrs. W. Brownlie, R. Brownlie and E. Brownlie, and the negative was taken by Clydebank, Messrs. E. Pattison, W. Taylor and O. McKenzie. The Clydebank team was judged the winner, securing 274 points as against Frasertown’s 268 points.
The Opoiti team, Messrs. H. M. B. deLautour, S. Glynan and T. Byrne, took the affirmative in the second contest, the negative being taken by Tawhara, Messrs. !R. 'Powdrell, RMullins and J. Harvey, This debate resulted in a win for the Tawhara team with 284 points as against Opoili’s 270 points. Mr. B. Parkinson acted as adjudicator, and at the conclusion of the contests, he constructively criticised the efforts of the various speakers and outlined many useful points. ft was decided to conduct a series of impromptu debates of three minutes' duration at the December meeting of the club.
