GAINS BY BRITAIN

SEIZED GERMAN SHIPS SMALL LOSSES SUFFERED (British Official Wirolnss.) Itecd. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 4. The British Merchant Navy has registered a net gain of nine ships,, totalling 45,000 tons, during the past week after allowance has been made for ships lost by enemy action. These figures are considered to be a remarkably satisfactory record. These gains in tonnage are effected partly at Germany’s expense since the British Prize Court recently adjudged the Pamona, and Hannah Bege to be lawful prizes and to be requisitioned by the Crown. Other gains are due to ships adverting to merchant marine status and to new construction. The enormous net losses suffered in 1917 through the U-boat campaign are contrasted with the present figures, and it is stated that the position is unlikely to be repeated in view' of the reduction of the effectiveness of the present submarine campaign and the enormous tonnage under construction.
