GISBORNE’S 60th A. & P. EFFORT

FINE WEATHER FAVOURS OPENING DAY

ONE OF BEST DISPLAYS OF STOCK

BIG CROWD AWAITS EARLY JUDGING

The Poverty Bay A. and P. Association’s Diamond Jubilee Show, which opened to-day, promises to be a record in every respect. The entries, totalling approximately 3500, exceeded the previous record, made in .1934, by more than 200, those ot. last year by nearly 500, and the total for the golden jubilee in 1929 by nearly 10*00.

In quality, the exhibits in all sections have reached a very high standard, and included among the cattle are some which have just returned from a successful Show circuit oi Maw he s Bay, the Wairarapa and Maniiwatii, while in the needlework are many entries from outside districts which tiguied prominently in the list of awards.

For the sixtieth- Show, the officials left no stone unturned to make the effort attractive, and even this morning, although the public does not usually attend in force until the second day, there was a big crowd awaiting the announcement of the early results, the numbers being regarded as larger than for some years for the first day. This good start was particularly encouraging for a wartime effort.

The weather was pleasantly fine throughout the day, with a promise of good conditions to-morrow. Much interest was taken in the effort of the Women’s Central Committee, which had undertaken the catering arrangements at the Show in order to raise funds for the Red Cross. The result was completely satisfactory to all concerned, arid the women’s committee was complimented upon the excellence of the service provided. Splendid Conditions

Show officials were able to congratulate themselves upon the best of fortune with the weather, the day being perfect for the outing. There was not enough wind in the air to lift the flags around the rings, and showmen and trade exhibitors contrasted to-day’s conditions with those of other show-days, when canvas whipped about and dust was more than a passing nuisance.

Under a bright sun, the grounds presented a picture for the eye, reflecting much credit upon the custodian and grounds committee. Patrons once again noted with appreciation the further growth of the sheltering- plantations, which offered a splendid frame for the diamond jubilee fixture of the association.

Among the amenities provided for the patrons of the Show was a St. John Ambulance depot, at which firstaid treatment was available, and a public-address system, operated by Gisborne Sound Systems, Limited, which proved highly useful in the tracing of lost children, as well as for the announcement of progress results from -the competition rings, and of messages to officials and to the general public.
