DEATH IN BRUSSELS

BURGOMASTER MAX A NATIONAL HERO (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 11 a.m. RUGBY. Nov. C. The evening newspapers express •egret at the death in Brussels to-day if Burgomaster Max. , following an ittaek of bronchial pneumonia. His courageous services to his own country in the last war are recalled in great detail. Burgomaster Max, who was 70 years if age, sent the following telegram .o the Lord Mayor of London at the beginning of September: “When Great Britain, faithful to its promise, courageously faces the trials of war, I express to you, to the members of the corporation of your city, and to the population of London, my feelings of most enthusiastic comradeship.” Visit by Queen

A Brussels message stales that Queen Elisabeth visited Burgomaster Max while lie was still conscious. The Minister of the Interior, M. Devcze, will attend the lying in state. Che funeral has been lixed lor Thursday, but Burgomaster Max, in his will, desired a dispensation of official honours, ceremonial, speeches, or an elaborate procession.

Burgomaster Max distinguished himself in 1914 by the manner in which he opposed the German invasion and occupation of Brussels. He was sent to solitary confinement in a German fortress and kept there until the end of the war. He is a national hero in Belgium, second only to the King.
