SCHOOLBOY PATROLS
STARTED AT BARTLETTS A.A. SAFETY MEASURE The first schoolboy patrol system in Gisborne for the control and safety of children approaching and leaving school grounds has been inaugurated at Bartletts.. The system was started this morning by the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, and will be continued by the headmaster of the school, Air. L. C. Ching, who has shown great interest in the safe-ty and well-being of the children.
Reporting on the progress of the patrol system. Mr. Merton said that it was intended to have the children of all schools in the district under the protection of the patrols. The system was working now in 14 of the schools in the cities, and all parties, including motorists, were satisfied with the results.
At Bartletts two ol the pupils, Stan Welfare and Robin Ching, had been appointed the patrols, and were provided with A.A. coat badges to distinguish them from the other pupils.
It was the duty of patrols to control the children and not the traffic on the road, Mr. Merlon explained. Some motorists had the impression that the schoolboy patrols could stop traffic to allow the children time to cross the road, but that was not the case. The pennants in use by the boys were to be used solely to direct the children, and they were to be stopped crossing the highway when traffic was approaching.
