OAKS TO-MORROW

LIKELY FANCIES

SLOW RUN DERBY

LINES OF MOORSOTIS

By “Trenton"

Eleven fillies figure in the Now Zealand Oaks to be deckled at Riccarlon to-morrow. Winning Rival made a poor showing in the Derby, but that was hardly her true form. Classform, by Inflation from Spenrform. by Greyspear from Merriform, by Boniform from Mcrrivonia, has shown up in throe of her races this season, her best effort being when she was second to Raeburn in the Ooclobcr Handicap, one mile, at Wellington, last month. There was only half a head between them. Inflation is by Paper Money from Fleeting, by Boniform from Snowstell. Fleeting is therefore a halfsister to Snowland, the dam of Arctic King, winner of the New Zealand Cue last year. The latter is inbred to Kiibroney. while Classform is inbred to Boniform —a great performer in his day—so that she should at least see out a mle and a half. Asia has been placed in her last three starts this season, the latest being at the Banks Peninsula meeting at Motukarara last Saturday week. This was a sevenfurlong event and was won by Montessa, who is also engaged in the Oaks. Asia is a full sister to St. John, winner of several prominent races in Australia. She is by Limond front Jewel of Asia and hails from the same family as Trivalve and Hall Mark, both Melbourne Cup and dual Derby winners in Australia. Montessa was bred there and is by Brazen from Iroiene, by Linacrc from Lady Eagle, by Malster, sire of numerous good winners. Brazen is the sire of Bronze Eagle, who accounted for both the New Zealand arid the Great Northern Derbies, while in Australia he got Kuvera. who annexed the V.R.C. King's Cup and Fisher Plate, one mile and a half, and many other line performers. Montessa was placed over seven furlongs at the recent Grand National meeting.

Yet To Be In Money

Dress Parade has yet to be in the money. She is by Nightmarch from Ball Dress, by Winning Hit from Equipment, by Martian, and thus comes from the same family as Winning Rival. Ball Dress is a halfsister to Rivalry by Winning Hit, a dual Derby winner. Anita Foe finished with a good run to win the Ruahine Handicap, one mile, at Trentham last month, and that success gives her prospects in this race, for it was her best performance to dale. She is by Defoe (sire of Defaulter! from Pollyanna by Acrostic, a half-brother to Solution, a good horse raced by Mr. R. W. Paterson. Wellington, who was taken to Sydney and won the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and five furlongs, in 1906. In her two starts last season Stylist's best effort was in the Trial Stakes, five furlongs, at Ashburton last May. She is another of the Nightmarch breed, her dam being Pride, winner of the New Zealand Oaks in 1928. The latter is by Sutala from Egotism. Sutala \va« a half-brother to Master Sbull and Prince Soult. while Egotism also produced Jnloux, who won a Summer Cup

at Eller.slic. Princess Minerva is a half-sister to Studlev Royal, being by Nighlmarch from Red Queen, by All Red from Lady Victoria, and thus comes from the same family as Night Prince. She has failed to get into the money this season, ns had Dinah Dhu, by Caledon from Sandra. Dinah Dim was bred in Australia and her sire, who is by Hurry On. proved himself a good stayer in England, while in Australia he got. among others. Young Crusader, winner of the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and five furlongs. Sandra is a half-sister to Valparaiso and Fujisan, both fine performers on tile other side. Sceptre was unplaced as a two-year-olcl last season, while this season liev best effort was a third to Sleeveless and Saxon Tor over five furlongs at Foxton in September. She is by Bulandshar from Silver Strand, an Aus-tralian-bred mare, and is a half-sister to Dornbey, who showed winning form a few seasons ago. The last is Authoress, who was second to Wings of Song over six furlongs at Marlon and third to Wings of Song and Sir Crusoe over seven furlongs at Trenlham recently. She is by Defoe from Otauru Lass, a daughter of Archiestown.

The finish may be fought out by Winning Rival, Classfprm and Anita Foe. Slow Derby Time As was expected, Beaulivre won the New Zealand Derby at Riccarton yesterday comfortably, and continues unbeaten this season.

Beaulivre opened liis account this .season by winning the open sprint at the combined Taranaki and EgmontWanganui Hunt meeting. Then came successes in the Wanganui, Avondale and Great Northern Guineas, the Trentham Stakes and Harcourt Cup. Now come wins in the Stewards' Handicap and Derby.

The time for the Derby yesterday was very slow. It eciuallocl the time taken by Fossieker in the mile-nnd-n----half hurdles at Napier Park last Saturday, namely. 2.40.

Sire a Stayer Moor«otis. runner-up in yoslerady's Derby at Riccarton. was successful in 11k* Middle Park Plale and the Hopeful Stakes at Riccarton last season, and he was considered good enough to lake to Australia this spring, but lie failed to show any form there. His sire, Myosotis, proved himself a good stayer in England. His dam. Moorbird, is by Tile Ace from Moorfowl. by Auliunnus from Kirriemuir, by Clnnranakl from Mndowla, who produced among others a good stayer in Quarryman, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and a half, at Riccarton, and other good races.
