Soiue unusual happenings have been witnessed in the Gisborne Show ring. In the lato ’nineties, Mr. Frank Arthur, a prominent horseman, was known for the unusual number of accidents which befell him, but luck was with him, and lie always escaped lightly. In 1891, when going over a high jump, lie lost his balance, finishing with Ills head between the animal’s forelegs and his feet still in the stirrups. He was rescued before aiy haini could como to him. In 1900, Mr. A. D. Shcrriff was riding over jumps a horse owned hy Mr. E. M. Hutchinson when the girth broke. Mr. Sherrill, hardly checking his horse at all, pulled the saddle from beneath him, finishing the remaining jumps bareback and winning the event. A girl rider, Miss Watt, riding the horse Federation, had an unenviable experience in 1901. The horse bolted three times round the ring. The rider displayed superb horsemanship, keeping her seat and taking each hurdle magnificently before the runaway was stoppod.
