OCTOBER’S POOR TALLY WELL BELOW 1938 The amount of sunshine in Gisborne during the past month presents a poor comparison with the tally for the corresponding month last year. The aggregate was 17G.9 hours for last month, compared with 261.4 hours in October of last year, while the daily readings averaged 5.7 hours, against 8.4 hours in October, 1938.

Although ruin was experienced on 14 out of the 31 days, there was not one day in the month which did not see the sun for a short period'at least. October 24, the day on which a frost of -4.3 degrees was recorded, also proved the brightest day in the month with a reading of 10.7 hours of sunshine.

Prior lo October, the sunshine tally for the present year had shown an improvement on that for the corresponding period in 1938, but. as a result of the poor return for last month the position was reversed, the aggregate for the 10 months being 1707.5 hours, against 1719.5 hours for the same period in 1938. The comparison of readings is- given in the following table: —

As well as being duller, the weather last month was much colder than that of October, 1938, the mean temperalure for tile period just ended being 53.9 degrees, compared with 87.7 degrees for October of last year. The shade temperature reached 71 degrees on October 26, this being the only occasion in the month that tlie 70 mark was exceeded, whereas in October last year there were 11 days on which the temperature rose above 70 degrees.
