DRIVE BY THE SEA
CENTENNIAL ROAD WORK GOOD PROGRESS MADE The possibility of having a short drive bv the seafront available at the Waikanae Beach prior to the Christmas season and so opening up more of the beach for picnic parties was mentioned to-day by Mr. A. J. Cox, the convener of the committee interested in the completion of the centennial marine drive.
’ The sandhills to the west of Salisbury road have been levelled out now for a considerable distance. It has been decided to continue with this work no further until the men have completed the covering of the sandy formation with clay and metal to hold the sand in place.
Good progress has been made in the past week with the metalling of an 18ft width of road, and there is a strio of 7ft Gin on each side of the metal for widening the highway later. The narrow strips, and the 16ft tin footpaths are being covered with a layer of binding clay to prevent the sand being scoured by the prevauing winds. The showers of rain of the oast week have been of benefit in consolidating the sand and, in places, grass is appearing. Mr. Cox said that wide footpaths were being provided to allow for the planting of avenues of trees and the placing of seats at intervals. Finance was still required by the committee for the construction of fences, planting, and further preliminary work with the bull-dozer.
