SAW U-BOAT SUNK
WAIROA TOURISTS MR. & MRS. E. E. C. BOYES LONDON PREPARED (Special to the Humid.) WAIROA, this day. Advice has been received in Wairoa that Mr. E. E C. Boyes, headmaster of the Wc.iroa District High School, and Mrs. Boyes, who have been on an extended tour of Great Britain and the Continent, have arrived at Lyttelton after being on the water for 52 days. With the Wairoa tourists were four other passengers, who, like themselves, had been waiting in England for a considerable time for a boat to bring them to New Zealand. Since their departure from the Dominion, Mr. and Mrs. Boyes have met with many interesting experiences, but perhaps the most vivid o r nil occurred during their journey back home, when they were the eye-wit-nesses of the sinking of an enemy submarine oy a British destroyer, one of the steamer’s convoy. The encounter occurred close by, depth charges being used to destroy the boat. Mr. Boyes said that when the first charge exploded, passengers aboard their ship thought ‘hey had been struck, so great was the concussion. Mr. Boyes expressed amazement at the effectiveness of the organisation in London to deal with emergencies, •'so different from the last war," he stated. He added that he had not seen other Wairoa people who were at present visiting England, great difficulty being experienced in getting ships home, and in his case he received only a few hours’ notice to sail. So short was his notice, m fact, that he had to leave some of his belongings behind to be posted out
