MAORI’S ORDEAL

INJURED BY EXPLOSION DRYING FUSE BY FIRE Found by two of his children with serious injuries to his face and his right hand blown off by the explosion of detonators on his farm at Tarao, near Whakatane, John Wineli. a Maori, aged 39, was admitted to the Whaknlanc Hospital on Thursday in a critical condition. Mr. Wineli was drying a fuse by a (ire, near which were lying detonators and gelignite. The gelignite ignited with the heat, causing the detonators to explode. After the accident Mr. Wineli was still conscious, and crawled about a quarter of a mile to a ditch, soaking his arm in the water. He was found there by two of his sons, afterwards being taken to the Whakatane Hospital.
