ROBBERS FOILED

CITY HOLD-UP

PAY CLERK ATTACKED

WORKMEN TO RESCUE CASH BAG RETRIEVED WAGES TOTAL £250 (P*;r Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A daring attempt at robbery with violence was made at the M.L.C. building, which is in course of construction at the corner of Hunter street and Lambton quay, at about 4.15 p.m. yesterday.

The pay clerk, William Parr, was carrying the wages ol‘ 50 men, amounting to about £250, when he was attacked by two men, one of whom struck him a severe blow on the face.

The bag was then snatched from Mr. Parr and the assailants were about to make off when two workmen, hearing a cry for help, rushed to Mr. Parr’s assistance. After a struggle they wrested the bag from one of the attackers, who then made off with his companion. Two Men Arrested Two men who were alleged to have been implicated in the attempted robbery were arrested as they were about to leave by the Limited Express, three hours after the attack took place. The arrest was made by Detective G. Hogan and acting-Detective G. C. Urquhart.

The money was the property of Mr. Angus, one of the contractors for the erection of the building, who has an office in a building in Hunter street adjoining the M.L.C. building. The pay clerk collected the money from the office and had just stepped on to the ground floor of the M.L.C. building when he was attacked. His face was considerably swollen as a result of the blow he received.

No money is missing, as the bag was recovered unopened.
