NEW ZEALAND CUP
RICCARTON MEETING EXCELLENT FIELDS OPEN RACES REVIEWED WIN-AND-PLACE BETTING By “Trenton” The Canterbury Jockey Club's New Zealand Cup meeting will open at Riccarton on Saturday, and excellent fields are engaged in all events. The win-and-place system of betting will be in operation.
Most interest will centre on the two big open events, the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap.
The Cup has drawn a field of 22 runners and, although few of that number have been over the Cup distance, there are so many possibilities in the race as td* make it very open.
The top-weight, Royal Chief, is by no means overweighted with 9.G, and he may be the actual favourite on the day, as he is a proved stayer. Arctic King, second last year, has not won for some time, but has had sufficient racing to fit him for a twomile journey. Lady Furst, Centrepoise, Lowenberg and Tooley Street will all. have to be considered, while a likely pair near the minimum are Yours Truly and Hunting Cat. The Open "Six”
The Stewards’ Handicap cannot be called a strong field and for that reason there is plenty of room for a surprise.
However, horses at the top of the handicaps are likely to dominate the belting, as Beauiivre has shown fine form and there are few better sprinters in the Dominion than Paper Slipper and Nighlcalrn. Rakahanga, Strip, Globe Trotter and Sleeveless are light-weights that will have to be considered.
The following are selected to run prominently in their respective engagements:— Spring Hurdle Race: Esperance Bay, Dividend.
Spring Plate: Sternchase, Chirp Wings of Song.
