REMOVAL WANTED
FARMERS' GRIEVANCES AID TO PRODUCTION TARANAKI REQUESTS (Per Pres-, Association.) HAWER'A, this day. That it will not be possible to bring about the required increase of primary production in New Zealand unless the causes leading to the decline are removed, was the opinion o£ a mass meeting of Taranaki farmers at Hawera yesterday. Resolutions were passed urging a national survey of public works with the object of closing down works which are unproductive and of a nonessential character, the suspension of the 40-hour week for the duration of the war, a drastic reduction of public expenditure, the fixation of prices for produce at a level which will cover the costs of production, and that the Government give 'an unqualified undertaking that any increase in powers of control over industry assumed since September \ will be removed as speedily as possible after the war.
Minister Criticised The meeting also expressed strong disapproval of the failure of the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, to accept the advice of the Dairy Industry Council in the fixation of dairy prices and that the Farmers' Union be charged with a full investigation into the farmers* position, the Government's socialistic policy, and to be ready to organise the resistance necessary after the war. The meeting made it clear that it is convinced of the necessity for an increase in production both to assist the Empire in the war effort and to solve the trade and financial difficulties of the Dominion, and assured the Government of its earnest desire to bring about such an increase. Speakers were Messrs. Sheat and Blyde, presidents of the south and north Taranaki provincial executives of the union, and Mr. Parsons, chairman of the Taranaki Federation of Dairy Factories.
Mr. Blyde asked for and received a promise from the audience that they were behind the leaders in their efforts to remedy the farmers' plight. He also deplored the suggestion of a strike.
