XMAS SHOPPING
LATE NIGHT FRIDAY SATURDAY HALF-DAY UNANIMOUS DECISION SHOW DAY CLOSING Complete unanimity on what was a somewhat contentious matter last year was reached at a representative meeting of the retailers' section of the Poverty Bay Employers' Association held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. F. Tolerton, the chair was taken bv the vice-president. Mr. K. R. Waite.
The matters to be decided at the meeting were the closing hours for shops on Show Day and the fixation of the shopping hours at Christmas and New Year. Eleven o'clock was unanimously approved as the closing hour for shops on Wednesday, Peoples' Day at the Show. Complete satisfaction was expressed on the Christmas and New Year shopping hours observed last year, and it was unanimously decided to observe the same this year, namely the late shopping night until 10 p.m. on Friday, December 22. close at noon on Saturday, December 23, and close all day on Monday and Tuesday, December 25 and "2(!, similar hours to be observed at New Year, except that the closing hour on Friday, December 29, will be 9 p..in instead of 10 p.m. Grocers Co-operate On behalf of the Gisborne Master Grocers' Union of Employers, Mr. E. C. Glanville, the secretary, intimated that at a prior meeting the master grocers had agreed unanimously to observe the hours indicated. It was resolved in order to avoid undue congestion of shopping on the days adjacent to Christmas, that retailers should endeavour to create the Christmas atmosphere earlier by commencing the decoration of their shops for Christmas on November 20.
