BOXERS SUSPENDED
ALLEGED FAKE FIGHTS MANAGERS CHARGED (Reed. Nov. 1, 9 a.m.) CHICAGO, Oct. 30. The Illinois State Athletic Commission has barred the heavyweight boxers, Tony Galcnto, Max Schmelling and Harry Thomas and the managers, Joe Jacobs and Nat E. Lewis, from further fights, pending a gubernatorial inquiry.
The Chicago Tribune published alleged affidavits in which Thomas says that by an arrangement between Lewis and Jacobs the fights with Schmelling on December 13, 1937, and Galcnto on November 14, 1938 were faked in order to build up reputations for challengers seeking bouts. Joe Louis says he received £I7OO for taking the “dive” and Schmelling was promised £I2OO for his meeting with Galcnto.
