TRAIN DERAILMENT
ESCAPE OF PASSENGERS COACHES STAY UPRIGHT CAPSIZE OF TRUCKS (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Five trucks, a horse box and two carriages were derailed a fe.w chains north of Brydone Hill when a mixed train travelling from Invercargill to Clinton was derailed a few minutes after midday yesterday. -None of the six passengers was injured, although an elderly woman was treated for shock
Although the cause of the accident has not been determined, it is thought to have been due to a fault in one of the trucks which several motorists saw jumping on the track just before the accident.
The carriages remained upright as they left the rails, but the trucks, which were filled with coal, oapsized, some rolling down an embankment When the train stopped one of the carriages stood with two trucks ranged alongside. Further along the train beside the front carriage lay two more trucks.
The horsebox contained a Clydesdale champion and it was necessary to use an axe to release the horse, which, however, was unscratched. Although considerable damage was done to the track, the express was able to get through, arriving at. Invercargill an hour and a h’alf late.
