HOUSING ACTIVITY

BUILDING IN GISBORNE MORE THAN 1938 TOTAL LULL IN OTHER WORK SMALL OCTOBER FIGURES Activity in the construction of new houses in Gisborne continues, and the total for the first 10 months of the year is ahead of that for the whole of 1938 both in the number of permits issued by the Gisborne Borough Council and in the estimated value of the work to be carried out.

Three permits were issued for dwellings last month, bringing the total to 36 for the year to date and the estimated cost to £32,038. During the corresponding period last year 30 permits were issued, the cost being estimated at £28,099, while for the whole of the past year the totals were 32 permits and £28,933 in value. This year's figures arc also considerably better than those of two years ago for the first 10 months, only 32 houses being sanctioned for that period in 1937 at a cost of only about £28,500

After two heavy months in the issue of building permits, October was comparatively quiet for other building work, and in all only 12 permits were issued for jobs estimated to cost £3203. these figures including those for the construction of dwellings.

Monthly Figures Compared

However, the figures for the year to date exceed those for the corresponding period last, year,, when the final two months brought the 1938 figures up to a record level. The position for all building permits and those for dwellings month by month during the first nine months of the present and past years is tabulated below:—
