FILM STUDIOS CLOSED

INDUSTRY AT STANDSTILL COMPANIES’ HUGE LOSSES LONDON. Oct. 26. The British film industry is almost at a standstill. Fourteen of the 16 studios are closed, and many, earmarked for Government use, have been taken over as food stores.

Eighteen thousand of the 20.000 employees are idle. They are unable to take Army or similar jobs, because they are classified as in reserved occupations.

Dozens of associated enterprises are hamstrung, because the Government will not decide whether producers may operate under the Quota Act. The suspension of the Act would involve the cancellation of 80 per cent of British pictures planned. All this entails the loss of £150,000 in wages a week, exclusive of stars salaries, and also the loss of £3,000,000 revenue.

A British news-reel film based on the Kiel raid of September 4 is described by the German press as \t "celluloid fairy-tale,” because, it say:. “no such raid occurred."

Mr. Alexander Korda's film "The Lion Has Wings," illustrating they AilForce’s war-time operations, has been passed for circulation.
