EXCISE WELL AHEAD SALES TAX IS NORMAL FIGURES FOR OCTOBER Collections of customs dues .at Gisborne for October showed a marked decline on the figure for the same month of 1933, being little more than half the total for the previous October. Beer excise payments were substantially in advance of those for the corresponding- period, on the other hand, and sales tax receipts, though slightly lower, indicated that the volume of business in normal channels had stood up well under the various adverse circumstances now operating. The fall in customs collections is due in a large measure to the heavy withdrawal of bonded goods which took place in September. That month set a record for the post-depression years and probably has never been equalled in the statistics of the department’s Gisborne office, well over CIO,OOO being paid in dues during the month. The effect was that the department anticipated part of the October revenue on goods subject to high rates of import dues. The revenue handled by the Gisborne office Of the Customs Department for October 1939 and 1938 was as follows: —
