THE WEATHER

Last Night’s Forecast General Situation: The recent depression is moving away to the east ol the North Island and a new disturbance is approaching from the south-west.

Forecast: Winds moderate to fresh northerlies to north-westerlies over the South Island extending to the Wellington and Taranaki provinces to-morrow, elsewhere fresh but decreasing south-westerlies or southerlies. Seas: In New Zealand waters, rather rough but decreasing north of Farewell Spit and between East Cape and Cape Paliiser, elsewhere slight or moderate but rising south of Westport and about Foveaux Strait. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate southwesterly winds and moderate seas in the northern portion, strong northwesterly to westerly winds and rough seas in the .southern portion. Weather: Some rain to-night in eastern districts ol Otago, but otherwise fair to fine generally at first, clouds increasing in Westland and the far south however, with rain developing to-morrow in these areas. Temperatures: Becoming milder, but some frosts probable to-night from Canterbury northwards.

To-day’s North Island Report

The barometric pressure at Gisborne rose slightly overnight, but early this morning it commenced to fall. There was a general rise in the pressure during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day over the northern part of the island, but the pressure at Wellington showed a big drop. Conditions were much less boisterous at all points along the East Coast this morning, though a strong wind was reported at Cape Pailiser. Westerly winds were general and fine weather was reported by all stations. The temperatures at 9 a.m. were: Cape Pailiser, G2 degrees; Auckland, 58; Gisborne, Napier and Wellington, 54. The sea was rough in Cook Strait, but elsewhere slight to moderate. Midday Forecast General situation. —An anticyclone is centred to the north and an active depression is now crossing the South Island. Forecast.—Moderate to strong northwest to west winds, with a temporary south-westerly change during to-night. Weather cloudy, with some scattered rain. Temperatures becoming cooler. Seas slight to moderate, but rising.
