No. 4B Scheme

Sir, —In answer to the letter signed "Worker” in Monday night’s issue of your paper, I wish to state that I am in the same predicament as he is and whole-heartedly support his views. I have also refused to cut scrub and therefore have become voluntarily unemployed and do not receive one penny from the Social Security Department. The head of the department says that the men have to go scrubcutting and if they refuse they become voluntarily unemployed and receive no sustenance.

How are these men going to keep their wives and children and pay their way? I have been in contact with a number of men, both married and single, who have returned from their scrubcutting contracts, and they say that they cannot earn more than 30s a week. Plow can a married man keep two homes going on that amount? Also, a number of men have returned home without completing their contracts on account of the terrible condition of their hands, and have got a medical certificate saying that they were unfit to carry on scrubcutting and have been given work in some ether employment in the meantime. “Worker” says he is a married man with five dependants under ,age and has to stand down for six weeks. How js "Worker” going to live in the meantime? There are many cases like his and it is about time the Government did something to rectify these matters. FED UP.
