RAIDING U-BOATS

FRENCH CRAFT DESTROYERS—PLANES BODIES PICKED UP BERLIN ESTIMATES LOSS OF SUBMARINES (Reed. Oct. 30, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 28. The Paris correspondent of the British United Press reports that French destroyers and seaplanes carried out several direct attacks on U-boats. At least one submarine was sunk, being torn apart by a depth bomb. The bodies of a number of the crew were recovered by fishing boats or were washed ashore.

The French Navy has announced that this U-boat was sunk in undisclosed waters on Friday.

A further Paris message quotes a French communique issued yesterday stating: "At sea our patrol boats picked up the bodies of German officers and sailors belonging to a sunken submarine.” U-Boat Overdue A message dispatchc-d yesterday from Berlin stated that a German ifficial communique for the first time mentioned submarine losses. It was stated that so far three U-boats were overdue and must be presumed lost.

The communique stated that the economic warfare in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea and the Atlantic continued to be successful to the German naval units, which confirmed he sinking, since October 18 of 22 ships of a total tonnage of 109,370.

Berlin states that the foreign press reports a further three sinkings vith a total tonnage of. 12,000. The ‘otal enemy losses during the war, according to the German version is 15 ships of a gross tonnage of •75,321. Because -unconfirmed retorts were disregarded it must be presumed that the real number was considerably higher stated the Berlin -eport. Despite the German successes n the trade war, their own losses were very small.
