BOWLERS’ DAY

GOOD BAGS SECURED CRICKET IN WAIROA HOPPER SHIELD SERIES HI SLOP BATS WELL (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Wickets were made to order for bowlers on the opening day of the Hopper Shield cricket competition in Wairoa on Saturday, and the success of the trundlers enabled the two lowest teams on tile points table last year, Swifts and High School, to gain victories over Rovers, last year’s champions, and Nomads, runners-up last year, respectively.

Swifts have to, thank Hislop’s brilliant. batting for their win over Rovers, this player reaching within nine of the coveted century before falling to Cooke.

Croker was the best trundler for Rovers, and secured five wickets for 52 runs. The same player was the best batsman for Rovers and made an aggressive 45 runs, being unbeaten at the close of his side’s innings. For Swifts, Ollivier bowler well to take six wickets for 38 runs.

Nomads had first use of the wicket in their game with School, and were all out for 80 runs, 20 of these coming from Shaw and 16 from Mann. All the School bowlers shared in the division of wickets. In reply, School made 91, Brewer, 27, and McLean and K. Pilkington, with' 20 apiece, batting well. Unwin, four for nine, and Millar, four for 29, were the best bowlers for Nomads.
