ROOSEVELT RETICENT

CRITICAL PRESS VIEW

(Reed. Oct. 28. 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 27

A message from Washington states that President Roosevelt at a press conference, said he lacked sufficient new information to comment concerning the American freighter City of Hint, which, after having been taken o tlie Russian port of Murmansk by a German prize crew, was reported yesterday to have been advised by .he Russian authorities to leave the harbour as soon as possible.

Mr. Roosevelt added that Murmansk was a long way from Moscow and details were hard to get.

The New York Times comments: “The reason why the City of Flint is it Murmansk instead of at the bottom of the sea is that she flew the flag, lot of a small neutral, wiiose protest could easily have been ignored, but .he flag of a great Western Power vhich Germany is less willing to affront.”

The fact that it took Russia two days to supply information as to the whereabouts of the City of Flint is taken as a sign of the Soviet’s embarrassment at the German capture of die vessel and in taking it to a Russian port.
