Small Girl Injured As a result of a fall yesterday while playing at school, Rita Knight, aged line, of 722 Aberdeen load suffered injuries which resulted in her admission to the Cook Hospital. The child’s condition this morning was reported to be fairly comfortable.

Wairoa Gardens A tribute to the work carried out in the Coronation Squ; re gardens by Mr. W. Jane was voice by Cr. C. R. Sainsbury, at a meeting of the Wairoa Borough Council last evening. Cr. Sainsbury said that the garden was a credit to Mr. Jane and compared very favourably with other gardens elsewhere. These remarks were heartily endorsed by the Mayor, Mr. H. L. Marker, ana Crs. J. O. Scott and L. E. Galbraith. —Special Red Cross Successes The following Wairoa candidates succeeded in passing a senior home nursing examination held under the auspices of the New Zealand Red Cross Society this week.—Mesdames M. Chamberlain, J. Hawthorne. J. Thomson, and E. Watson; Misses M. Gemmell, E. Hannan, L. Heslop, M. McErlick, J. Nolan, J. O'Connor and M. Packwood. Honours, 85 per cent and over, were gained by Mrs. Hawthorne and Miss Gemmell. —Special.

Wairoa Council’s Meeting- Night

The inconvenience caused to some councillors by the council meeting on Friday night, the late night in the town, was mentioned by speakers at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa Borough Council last evening. It was pointed out that the late night was to be reviewed by local wholesalers and Cr. L. E. Galbraith gave notice of motion that the meeting night be altered. The matter will be fully discussed when the matter is then before ’he council. —Special Request By Architects

At a meeting of the Wairoa Borougli Council ’ast evening, a letter was received >'rom the New Zealand In:titute of Architects asking that a by-law be passed similar to that recently passed by the Auckland City Council to the effect that a registered architect must be employed in all cases where the estimated cost of a building exceeded £2OBO. A recom. mendation to the effect that the request be given effect to when the by-laws'were Doing altered was adopted.—Special. Grants For Schools The member for the Bay of Plenty, Mr. A. G. Hultquist, has received advice from Ministerial sources of grants having been approved for an open-air class-room, with cloak-room and store, at the Mihiwhetu Public School, in the Tolaga Bay area. Prior to his departure for London the Hon. P. Fraser, in his capacity of Minister of Education, also advised Mr. Hultquist that the Cahipet had approved grants for remodelling and renovating the teachers’ residence, the provision of two shelter sheds, and the establishment of a manual training department at the Rangitukia Native School, near Tikitiki. Second Eschelon Officers Included in the list of central military command officers called up for service with the Second Eschelon of the New Zealand Special Military Force are four commissioned men from this district. They include Captain W. Bourke and Lieutenant K. R. S. Crarer, whose identity with the Gisborne area was indicated yesterday, and also Lieutenant G. M. Beaumont, who is to serve with the New Zealand Artillery, and Lieutenant H. W. Robins, of the New Zealand Corps of Signals. Lieutenant Beaumont is assistant engineer to the Gisborne Borough Council, and Lieutenant Robins resides in Tikitiki.

Sympathy Expressed A motion of sympathy with the Mayor Mr. H. L. Harker, in the recent death of his son was passed by the Wairon Borough Council last evening. Cr. M. J. Gcmmell, proposing the motion, said that all Wairoa had received the news of the Mayor’s loss with dero regret. Seconding the motion, Cr. L. E. Galbraith said that ail Wairoa had admired the fortitude of the Mayor and Mayoress and family in their loss. Responding, the Mayor commented that over 300 messages of sympathy had been received from all over Now Zealand. If was a matter of pride (hat his son had died for the Empire and he feared that many more deaths would follow in the course o f the present war. The sympathy of all was deeply appreciated. The motion was passed in lhe usual manner. the town clerk -being instructed to convey in writing the sympathy of the council.—Special. Trouble at Sub-Station

The interruption to the electrical supply in the Poverty Bay ElectricPower Board's district on October IC, which was reported on by the engineer at yesterday's meeting of the board, was occasioned by a collapse of a double-post insulator at the Patutahi sub-station. The board’s staff were informed by Mr. S. C. Wells of the breakdown at once, and at his suggestion linesmen were dispatched from Gisborne, the departmental linesmen being not available at that time. While the technicians from Gisborne were still on route, however, the trouble at Patutahi was by-passed, and the supply of current restored, the outage lasting from 10.34 a.m. to 10.53 a.m. The prompt intimation to the Power Board’s staff from the substation enabled the stand-by plant to be put into operation without loss of time, to take up the ioad and limit the inconvenience caused to consumers.
