RIVER MOUTH BAR WAIROA COUNCIL MEETS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A short agenda paper was laid before members of the W’airoa Borough Council at the monthly meeting last evening, the majority of the matters contained being speedily dealt with. There were present the Mayor, Mr. H. L’. Harker, and Crs. A. W. Archibald, J. O. Scott, J. Cooke, L. E. Galbraith, W. H. Flint, W. Brady. C. R. Sainsbury, and M. J. Gemmell. Copies of the reports of the Minister and from the local engineer of the Public Works Department dealing with the mouth of the Wairoa River were forwarded by the Wairoa Harbour Board, the board pointing out that it was of opinion that nothing could be done in regard to letting out the river through the beach until the river mouth blocked itself naturally. In view of the reports, the council failed to see the grounds on which the board reached its decision and it was recommended by the works committee that the board be asked to give urgent reconsideration to the question, with a view to giving efifecto the recommendations of the Minister. Both the recommendations and the report of the engineers were published fully in the Herald recently. Valuation of Properties A report received indicated that the council’s objection to the reduction ii; the unimproved values of five properties purchased by the Housing Department had been sustained and that the Assessment Court, at its sitting in Wairoa last week, had reinstated the values to those previously assessed. The Mayor indicated that it was pleasing to see that the council was successful in a matter of principle. A report of vandalism affecting one of the borough parking signs was received and it was decided to ask residents to report any cases coming under their notice.
Satisfaction with the lighting provided by the four centre street lights installed in Marine parade was expressed. It was reported that the installation of similar lights of this type along the parade to Delhi street was being carried out. The works committee reported that the Cl grader was in need of extensive repairs and submitted a price obtained for the carrying out of the work, which it held to be essential. The medical officer of health, Gisborne, wrote disapproving of the situation of the rubbish-dump, the letter being received.
The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, advised the council that the work in connection with the building of bridges to replace the temporary bridges on the WairoaNapier road was being proceeded with, the Minister being thanked for his assurance.
