COMPULSION URGED
MILITARY SERVICE ASHBURTON FARMERS (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. The mid-Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union adopted resolu-tions-suggesting that no local body be permitted to make a donation in excess of the amount permitted as unauthorised expenditure, and that employees of local bodies enlisting be granted leave without pay while on service.
The union stressed the need for a national register so that the full man-power of the country could be utilised to the best advantage.
The union protested against the evasion by the Government of the question of how long the control of the pastoral industry would last, and urged that the commandeer should be the same as in the last war.
It was stated that the first resolution aimed at forestalling local bodies being used by the Government as collecting agencies, while the third amounted to a call for compulsory service in New Zealand and overseas.
