TREND IN UNION
SOLID SUPPORT

BRITISH PURCHASES
(Reed. Oct. 26, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 25
The Johannesburg correspondent of the News Exchange Agency states that opinion throughout the Union of South Africa is strongly swinging towards the policy of the new Prime Minister, General J. C. Smuts. The Zoutpansberg area of the Transvaal, regarded as a reactionary centre, is now solidly for General Smuts. The Witvvatersrand United Party branches show 92 per cent in favour of the Government.
The Bloemfontein correspondent of The Times states that Dr. Viljoen, the Secretary of Agriculture, said that Britain was willing to operate on the open wool market sufficiently to maintain prices at least at the Australian level and possibly more. The United Kingdom would no doubt take the maize export surplus and would definitely take all surplus dairy produce and citrus fruits.
