Cruelty to Animals
Sir,—l should like to express something of my thoughts regarding that dastardly case of cruelty to animals which took place at one of the recent race meetings. Not being present myself, I can only quote what I heard. Firstly, where were the police to allow such a thing? Secondly, who are tlie people responsible in such cases? Thirdly, if a humane killer was there to be used, why was it not tested before hand and not experimented with, thus causing the most cruel torture to one of our most beautiful animals? Fourthly, Was it true —it does not seem possible that it could be—that finally the unfortunate victim was knocked on the head and dragged off the course by the neck before death had taken place?
Surely, if this sort of thing is going to be repeated, it is time that Parliament passed an Act to prohibit races in the future. That anything like this should be allowed to take place anywhere, especially at a public function, is absolutely unpardonable and a disgrace to New Zealand. MEMBER OF S.P.C.A.
