GISBORNE CLUB INCREASING MEMBERSHIP SEASON’S PROSPECTS Preliminary arrangements for tiic forthcoming season of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club were under discussion at a meeting of the committee held last evening. There were present Messrs. R. J. Quinn, chairman, A. S. Parker, W. 11. James, A. Kane, A. I. McAneney, M. Taylor, W. Campbell and J. E. Mercer (lion, secretary). In welcoming members of the committee, the chairman referred to the spirit of enthusiasm manifest at the annual meeting last week, which augured well for the success of the season. lie expressed the hope that members would again be able to combine harmoniously in the task of catering for amateur sport in the district and that the club would be favoured with the public support which its activities truly merited.
In supporting the remarks of the chairman, committee members indicated that a considerable number of inquiries as to prospective active membership ol' the club had been received. it being further stated that, in cycle • events,. fields of at least 15 riders could be confidently expected. Included in the outward correspondence approved by the meeting was a letter forwarded by the secretary to the Gisborne Borough Council referring to the financial position of the club and applying for the use during the season of the Childers Hoad Reserve.
Subject to the necessary permission to again make use of the grounds it was decided that the weekly sports meetings of the club be held on Tuesday evenings, decision as to the actual opening date being deferred pending arrangements for the preparation of the tracks and lighting.
Appreciation of the honour conferred by the annual meeting of the club in electing them as vice-presi-dents was expressed in letters received from Messrs. W. M. Wildish and E. Harris, both of whom enclosed donations to the club funds. The meeting recorded votes of thanks for the donations, similar appreciation being accorded to Mr. J. Algie, who had forwarded a donation to the annual meeting.
Messrs. H. F. Forster. G. Oliver and G. Mosely were elected as the club’s 'delegates' to the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bav Centre, the annual meeting of which is to be held at Napier on Saturday.
