HORSE NOT ELIGIBLE

HURDLER AT WAIKATO

L. J. ELLIS ENGAGED

ROYAL CHIEF IN N.Z. CUP

By “Trenton”

After making tile trip from Ellerslie to Takanini, Lapidarian had lo forgo his engagement in Hhe Hunters’ Hurdles at the Waikato Hunt Club's annual meeting at Cambridge. His last-minute withdrawal was due to the fact that lie was ineligible owing lo having won the Trial Hurdles, of £350. at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting. The event on Monday was for horses who had not won a race of any description of lire value of more than £253. or races of any description of the collective value of £SOO prior to the time of starting. The same conditions applied to the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, in which Lapidarian was also engaged.

Worth Watching-

Capricious is a difficult filly to ride in a race, and apparently requires plenty of room. On Saturday at Treniham her rider endeavoured to push her through an opening when challenging the leaders in the straight, but she showed a dislike for the undertaking and it was then necessary to take her to the outside of a spreadout bunch in front. This all meant severe checking and the loss of valuable ground and her chance of ever again being prominent looked very remote. The- filly, however, settled down to an outstanding finishing effort which would have landed her a winner in another stride. She should be well worth watching. Sub-Editor’s Win The tenth anniversary of the birth of Sub-Editor, a gelding by Surveyor from Bunty, was marked by the winning of the Waikato Hunt Cup at Ca mbridge on Monday. Sub-Editor was first trained by the iate W. Patterson. Takanini, and was later in the hands of -J. F. Tutchen, Ihe Te Rapa trainer. For two years Sub-Editor was used as a hunter in the Waikato. Mrs. P. G. O'Connell, Kopurika. Galatea, resumed ownership last year and •trained the horse herself. Her efforts had a successful culmination by the fine victory achieved on Monday. Bolt! Showing Blue Coat made a bold showing for six furlongs in the Trial Stakes at Trentham. He is a very free galloper and can be expected to win some good races this season. New Licenses J. Young, a well-known trainer of light-harness horses, has been granted a trainer’s license by the Racing Conference. W. P. Hogan lias been granted a jockey's license to ride in hurdle races only. Royal Chief’s Rider Before leaving Sydney last week, A. E. Eilis was engaged by F. D. Jones ’o ride Royal Chief in the New Zealand Cup. Conference Secretary At a meeting of the executive committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference on Thursday, Mr. A. M. Mcßeth was appointed secretary to tlie conference. He joined the conference office 20 years ago, and had been the acting-secretary since July. By Hall Mark An interesting candidate in the two-vear-old event at Trentham was King’s Mark, a chestnut coll by Hall Mark from Increase. He is trained by G. New, who led in Cetewayo, a first-day winner. The latter incidentally is a close relative to Herowinkie, the dam of Hall Mark and also of Trivalve, Cetewayo is not to be raced again until Christmas.

Riders Changed Evidently a change of riders benefits a horse. At Trentham, Cherry Bay. Blonde Princess and Centrepoise had a change of riders from the first day. and all three \yon in succession. At a Disadvantage Toro-Koura has for some time suffered from a shoulder complaint which has defied efforts to overcome it, and it was evident by the way in which he moved in his preliminary at Trentham on Saturday and in which he performed in the race that the trouble was affecting him. This was considered the cause ol' his poor race at Wingatui early in the month, but it was not in evidence at Washdyke, where his form suggested he was capable of winning in the best of company.
