CARROLL PORTRAIT
TRUSTEES’ APPROVAL ACCEPTED FOR GALLERY PRESENTATION PLANS Advice has been received by the committee of the Carroll Portrait Fund, formed in Gisborne to finance die commission of a portrait of the late Sir James Carroll, M.L.C., for presentation to the National .Art Gallery, that the painting submitted has been approved by the trustees.
The portrait was exhibited in Gisborne recently, and, provoked much interested comment from members of the public. The late Sir James Carroll was presented in a characteristic attitude of smiling interest in debate, and, despite the difficulty of exhibiting the work in a suitable setting, the general opinion expressed was that the artist had caught faithfully the more human aspects of the subject.
It has been suggested by the trustees of the National Art Gallery that the presentation of the portrait should be made at a function to be held at some date suitable to a majority of those interested. The scene of the function, it is suggested further, should be the Maori house in the Dominion Museum attached to the Art Cillery, this building having ancient associations with tire interests which Sir James Carroll represented in his life and political activities The suggestions have been acceded to by the Gisborne committee, and arrangements are being pushed forward for the 'unction.
