MERCHANTMEN SAVED
OBSERVER CORPS WORK ASSISTANCE CALLED (Elec. T«l. Copyright—Unitod Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBBY, Oct. 25. The Observer Corps, which maintains throughout the country watching and listening posts against enemy attack, saved at least two merchantmen. The first occasion occurred when two ships collided at night off the' 1 east coast. One was holed and sent out an SOS with a siren, which the. pod heaixl. Another post saw rockets, and lifeboats saved the crew of 12. On the second occasion a post on the west coast heard an explosion and sent a message to the Admiralty, which sent out tugs to a steamer which had been holed by a mine or a torpedo. The tugs beached the steamer, despite its sinking condition, while destroyers hunted the sunmarine.
